Earmatic: Boss Lady
Earmatic had the pleasure of being a part of the Def Jam conference call. We spoke with and learned a lot about the one only talented Jhene Aiko.
Jhene has been in the music industry since 2003, she released a video for her debut single "NO L.O.V.E" when she was 15 years old. We asked her about her musical career and what her journey has been like as well as her future goals. She is a woman of many talents. She sing, produce and write. Aiko comes up with the concepts that are outside the box to keep her fresh and new in this game we call creative music.
With the new project that she has coming out she wants it to be more detailed and more intimate. She wanted to display her talent and convey to her fans how important transparency would be with music videos and poetry tying everything together to be a true renaissance woman of the new millennium. She tries to stay ahead and create her own personal experience. Taking very intimate details of her own life situations, experiences and things she has been a part of to things she watched from afar to create something that we could all relate to.
She took the time and wrote treatments herself so that it would come alive the way she wanted it to. While she is open to work with anyone that has the same passion for music she wants to make sure the vibe and flow is organic.
Jhene loves to do shows and while doing these shows she also loves connecting with and talking to the audience. She some what uses her shows as a form of therapy, it draws her closer and makes every experience personal.
The last album " Trip" was very easy for her to write when she was going through something. She had more time and energy to be creative. " Nobody" took her the longest to write which was a single from that album that she had to keep rewriting to convey the emotional journey she was going through. She wanted listeners to feel like they were in her diary and if they closed their eyes they could experience every word she was singing.
Earmatic : Being a female artist how do you stay motivated and who inspires you in this era of music?
Jhene Aiko: I'm not in competition with anyone, I stay in my lane. Confidence is the key. The more you use it the stronger it becomes. There is enough money and fans out here to support everyone. I am inspired by Beyonce and Rihanna. They are true female artists, who are strong in their identity and they are great role models for myself other female artists or other artists in general. I also would love to work with Michael Frank (Jazz artist).
The bottom line is, she is another reason why we have created Earmatic. She was a breath of fresh air to talk to. She cares about the music and its art. Jhene is brave enough to use it as an expression therapy to help rebuild the soul. Thank you Jhene Aiko, please keep sharing and growing with us.
